OCEAN FISHING REPORT

HOT BITES

San Diego Fishing reports by 976-TUNA HOT BITES Sept 22,2005 ROCKFISH: The Channel Islands rockfish action has been awesome. Port Hueneme Sportfishing boats have been returning with limits of rockfish for all anglers on board almost every day this past week. Further south, boats that have been targeting rockfish are also seeing excellent action. The cooler water temperatures have made this bite a 180-degree turnaround from early in the season when there were unseasonably warm temperatures and much poorer fishing. WHITE SEABASS: There has been a flurry of good white seabass action early this week in the Channel Islands. The Island Tac, Channel Islands Sportfishing, had 23 seabass Monday and 19 Tuesday. The Sea Jay, Hueneme Sportfishing, had one fish per rod on Tuesday. The bite's not wide open, but as most surface bites state to wane, this is a bite to jump on. MARLIN: Winds and the end of the spawning season have made the marlin fishing tougher this past week, but it's still very good. The bulk of the action has been in the blue water on the inside of San Clemente and the backside of Catalina. Anglers are still seeing six or seven fish a trip and managing to get a fish to two to bite. Most of the marlin are 100 to 120 pounds. BONITA: Catalina Island is still seeing a pretty good bonito bite, even in the rain early this week. The volume of fish is not the same as its been the previous three weeks, but there's still a lot of fish here and anglers are still cashing in. The Enterprise out of Long Beach Marina Sportfishing was out with 49 anglers Saturday and landed 230 bonito, 59 calicos, 25 rockfish, 1 barracuda, 17 sheepshead, one ling, 29 perch, and 5 whitefish in a pretty darn good mixed bag catch. The bonito are mostly 1-0 to 5-0 with the average a solid 3 1/2 pounds. There has also been a very good bite of bonito in King Harbor at Redondo Beach for fly and bait anglers or trollers. Most are 2-0 class fish. YELLOWFIN TUNA: Winds and swell have made the ocean a popcorn mess much of the past week, but there is still one good area of fish about 75 miles off the coast in the Mushroom and Butterfly banks region. The seas flattened up Monday and Tuesday and the First String, 22nd Street Landing, was there on a two-day trip to cash in. The 29 anglers on board had 286 yellowfin and one yellowtail. But by Wednesday, the swell was back up and winds were increasing making fishing conditions tough again. The yellowfin are mostly 16 to 25 pounds with a few bigger fish. Earlier in the week, the Sea Hawk LXV from Davey's Locker, finished a two-day trip on Saturday with 112 yellowfin, 300 skipjack, and 11 yellowtail for the 25 anglers on board. The Ultra, Newport Landing, was out Sunday with seven anglers and they had five yellowfin, but there were also 13 bluefin and two bigeye tuna in this catch. These fish were up to 50 pounds. YELLOWTAIL: There was a flurry of good yellowtail action on Tuesday on the back side of Catalina off the end on Monday and Tuesday. These were quality fish to 30-plus pounds, but the word got out and the spot was being pounded Wednesday. These fish have been popping in this spot for a few weeks, but each time the pressure gets up they sink out for a few days to a week or more. ALBACORE TUNA: The albacore bite on the Central Coast has been blow out for two weeks now. The water temperatures are still good for the longfins to hang in this region should the weather ever break so boats can get out to them.

LOCAL FISHING: The Orange and Los Angeles County boats are also starting to see improved action again out around San Clemente.

From The Royal Polaris: 4-14-2004 "Fish Hard, Fish Fast" THE FINAL TROLL REPORT on Sunday, April 11, 04 remember 2004 After having a wonderful trip, the thought of even trolling for Albacore in the month of April might seem a little bit nuts. But with the fish that have been caught here in the last couple of weeks, it sounded like it was worth a try. I wish we had a good fish report for today but even though we don't - things look very good for an early season to say the least. We would like to say Thank You to all of the Anglers who joined us on this first Spring trip and are looking forward to fishing with all of you again in the future Sunday, April 11, 04 AT THE DOCK The boat returned this sunny Easter morning at 6:30am with a beautiful load of Yellowfin and Yellowtail. After the weigh in, there were 9 Yellowfin over 100lbs and there were a few nice Yellowtail caught; 41.8lbs caught by Doug Woodard and a 39.5lb Tail caught by his fishing buddy, Greg Izay. The tuna were bait fish and those spring Tails were caught on the flyline, dropper loop and some were even yo-yo fish. This first trip of the American Angler's season was a great way to kick off the year and a positive indication of what's to come. We still have a few spots on a couple of upcoming 7 and 8 day trips - give the office a call @ 619 223 5414. From the Excel Hello Anglers, We arrived at the landing at 0600 and offloaded fish.
